This 'fatigue' group of shirt sleeved figures has many applications, for it must be debatable how a soldier spent most of his time digging and lifting, hammering posts and laying barbed wire or just humping shells and ammo. When not occupied they were being shelled, soaked to the skin or freezing cold. They called themselves the P.B.I. simply Poor Bloody Infantry.

At the start of the war, the B.E.F. called many Boer war veterans back to the colours, and a hard bitten lot they were.
